Advanced Pulse Therapy for Horses & Riders
A targeted, non-invasive therapy used for pain relief & management of hard-to-find dysfunction in horses,
where the body has fallen into chronic compensation patterns and vet scans give no answers.
Powered by German technology at Keytec, this therapy builds on SCENAR-style neuro-adaptive systems, working directly with the nervous system, not just the muscles.
How does it work?
This therapy works by interacting directly with the nervous system, using electrical impulses that continuously adjust based on the body’s response (biofeedback).
It stimulates nerve pathways involved in pain and movement
encourages the release of neuropeptides (the body’s own regulatory chemicals)
it interrupts persistant pain cycles
and reset’s the body’s internal dialogue to begin healing & recovery from the inside.
Medkey Pulse Therapy helps horses affected by:
chronic or unresolved pain
nerve-related discomfort
arthritis
tendon and ligament injuries
locking stifles / poor hind-end engagement
kissing spine
TMJ and poll tension
performance-related soreness
laminitis and other ongoing conditions
How this helps horses
Pain doesn’t just hurt—it changes how a horse uses its body:
they avoid loading certain joints or limbs
they overuse other areas, leading to secondary issues
they can’t build strength properly because they’re not using the body correctly
By helping reduce that underlying pain response, you give the horse a chance to:
move more evenly
engage the right muscles
actually benefit from training or rehab work
This is why it works best alongside your exercise program—not instead of it.
What’s different comparied to other therapies…
PEMF → delivers a general electromagnetic field over an area
→ this is targeted and responsive, adjusting moment to momentTENS → fixed electrical stimulation for pain relief
→ this changes output constantly based on the body’s feedback (biofeedback loop)Equissage → mechanical vibration for circulation and muscle relaxation
→ this works through neurological pathways, not just muscle stimulation
Medkey therapy works at the level of the nervous system, where pain and movement are actually controlled.
This type of neuro-adaptive therapy has been used in human settings for decades for pain and functional rehabilitation—and is now being applied to horses across the world from the UK, Europe, New Zealand and now Australia.
Currently offered exclusively by KOlsen Equine Bodywork across the Central West and Blue Mountains.
*For best results,
an initial block of 4 weekly sessions is recommended to fully intergrate the therapy and achieve long lasting results. This will depend on your horse’s individual symptoms.
Don’t forget to look after your body too!
If you’ve returned to horses after childbirth, surgery, injury or years away from horses, you’d notice how your body doesn’t move like it used to.
Having the best trainng, tack and bodywork will only go so far for your horse if your own body is restricted in the saddle from pain.
Medkey therapy is non invasive and doesn’t interact with medication or your PT’s plan.
If you’ve been smiling throught nerve pain, tight hips & lower back, shoulder stiffness, chronic headaches or joint pain,
its time to book yourself a Rider Medkey session so you get to enjoy your horses without feeling like you’re 100 yrs old…
For best results - a minimum of 4 weekly sessions is recommended for your body to intergrate the changes for longer lasting relief.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Medkey Bioadaptive Impulse Therapy is a form of electrotherapy used to help reduce pain and support the body’s natural healing processes.
It works by delivering gentle impulses through the skin to:
Help interrupt pain signals
Support the nervous system
Encourage the body to rebalance and function more normally
In horses, this can help with:
Pain and discomfort (especially hard-to-pinpoint areas)
Muscle tension and guarding
Movement restrictions linked to chronic issues
It’s non-invasive, well tolerated, and often used alongside bodywork to get better, longer-lasting results.
-
Chiropractic work and medkey therapy do different jobs, and they work best together, not instead of each other.
Chiro focuses on joint alignment and adjustments. Medkey therapy focuses on the muscles, fascia, and tension patterns that sit around those joints.
If the surrounding muscles are tight or compensating, they can:
Pull the body back out of alignment
Limit how well adjustments hold
Keep the same movement issues coming back
Medkey therapy helps:
Support and maintain the changes made by your chiro
Improve how your horse actually moves between treatments
Address the underlying tension that contributes to the problem.

I’m a fully mobile service, so I come to you.
I regularly cover:
Blue Mountains
Central West
Out to Mudgee
Across to Molong and Lyndhurst
If you’re outside these areas, I can still travel—just note:
A minimum of 4 horses is required for group bookings ( call your friends/neighbours)
A $20 travel fee applies
If you’re unsure, just reach out and we’ll work something out.
-
It depends on the horse, their workload, and what we’re working on.
As a general guide:
Every 4–6 weeks for maintenance and performance horses
More regularly for horses with discomfort, postural issues, or returning to work
The biggest difference comes when sessions are combined with the home plan—that’s what keeps your horse progressing instead of going backwards between visits.
-
Bodywork can make a big difference for older horses, even if they’re no longer in work.
As horses age, they often develop stiffness, compensation patterns, and general wear and tear that can affect how comfortable they are day-to-day. Bodywork helps to:
Ease muscle tension and stiffness
Support joint mobility and overall comfort
Improve circulation
Help them move more freely in the paddock
Support quality of life as they age
It’s not about “fixing” them—it’s about keeping them as comfortable, mobile, and happy as possible.
-
Most horses show subtle signs long before anything obvious:
Hard to bend one way
Short or uneven stride
Reluctance under saddle (especially transitions or canter)
Girthy, sensitive, or reactive to grooming
Changes in behaviour that feel “off”
A lot of what gets labelled as training issues or attitude can come back to discomfort in the body.
-
No—and it shouldn’t be.
Bodywork is supportive care, not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment. If your horse has an injury or ongoing issue, I’m happy to work alongside your vet or other professionals.
The goal is to:
Support recovery
Improve comfort and movement
Help prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones
-
A little bit of preparation makes a big difference to how much your horse gets out of the session.
Before I arrive:
Have your horse caught and ready
Ideally tied up or have someone available to hold them
Make sure they’re clean (they don’t need to be washed, just free of mud and heavy dirt)
During the session:
Set up in a quiet area with minimal distractions
Avoid feeding other horses nearby, as this can make it hard for your horse to settle
Also, please check your horse beforehand for:
Skin infections, wounds, or open sores
If any of these are present, we’ll need to postpone the session until they’ve healed.
About Karen…
Karen is a Key Equine Therapist based in Oberon, NSW, servicing the Blue Mountains and Central West.
She works with horses experiencing movement, behaviour, or performance challenges, with a focus on improving posture, releasing muscle tension, pain relief and helping horses return to functional soundness.
Each session includes a simple, structured plan for owners to continue at home.
After a career in emergency and community health nursing, Karen developed a strong interest in equine biomechanics through working with her own horses who developed signs of body pain and soundness issues.
Frustrated by conflicting advice, she began studying equine massage & soft tissue bodywork to better understand and support horses dealing with ongoing pain and tension.
Karen gained her certification in Key/SCENAR Equine Therapy in 2025 after experiencing the benefits of this therapy herself for stubborn nerve pain. She now incorporates it into her work to support horses with issues such as chronic pain, restriction, stringhalt, kissing spine, and soft tissue injuries.
Her approach is practical, holistic and evidence based using a variety of techniques adapted help to each horse so they get the most out their sessions.
Karen is currently completing her Equine Sports Massage Certification through Equestricare Australia and has completed Equine Functional Posture Level 1 with Dr Raquel Butler.
Fully insured through IICT.
